From Connectivity to Connection: Staying Grounded in a Digital World
In today’s hyperconnected world, technology has become an essential part of our lives, offering convenience, connection, and opportunities for growth. Yet, this constant connectivity often leaves us feeling overwhelmed, distracted, and disconnected from ourselves and others. On
Techtimeout Tuesday, we are reminded of the importance of taking a mindful pause from technology and how intentional breaks can foster deeper connections.
Recently, we had the privilege of delivering a workshop,
“From Connectivity to Connection: Staying Grounded in a Digital World,” for London Business School’s Experiential Learning Team. This session explored how mindfulness, art, and creativity can help us navigate the challenges of our digital habits while cultivating meaningful connection and presence.
Reflecting on Our Digital Habits
It’s important to reflect on our digital habits. To begin, ask yourself:
- How much time do I spend online each day?
- How do I usually feel after spending a lot of time online?
- Do I feel more connected or disconnected after using social media?
Self-awareness is the first step to making meaningful changes. Research shows the average UK adult spends 76% of their waking hours online—equivalent to over 13 hours a day! Reflecting on these habits helps us understand how they impact our health, focus, and relationships (Source:
Bionic).
When participants in our workshop reflected on these questions, most reported feeling tired, drained, or disconnected after extended time online, while some noted that their experience depended on the day.
These insights highlight the value of intentional reflection and mindful adjustments to digital behaviour.
Mindfulness: A Tool for Grounding and Focus
Mindfulness is a powerful tool for grounding ourselves in the present moment. It helps us step out of autopilot, reconnect with our bodies, and cultivate intentional awareness. In a world where digital distractions are constant, mindfulness offers a way to counteract stress, enhance focus, and promote emotional balance.
A simple mindfulness practice you can try is grounding:
- Pause and tune into your surroundings—what can you see, hear, smell or feel?
- Notice your breath.
- Observe the sensations in your body.
Practising mindfulness not only helps us become more present and aware, but also strengthens our ability to focus.
Exploring Digital Life Through Art
Engaging with art provides a unique opportunity to reflect on our digital experiences and navigate the complexities of modern life. Looking at and engaging with art encourages us to slow down, reflect on our emotions, and gain new perspectives. Discussing artworks with others fosters meaningful conversations and connections. It can also bring new insights and raise questions we might not have considered before.
For example, one of the artworks that we discussed in our workshop is Amalia Ulman’s
“Excellences & Perfections” explores the performative nature of social media. By curating an entirely fabricated Instagram persona, Ulman challenged perceptions of authenticity in a digital world. Reflecting on such artworks helps us question our own digital behaviours, promoting both self-awareness and emotional insight.
Art can be a powerful tool for enhancing wellbeing, inviting us to reconnect with ourselves in profound ways.
Creativity in Action: The Power of Art-Making
Art-making and creativity allow us to express ourselves, process emotions, and explore topics like digital overload in a hands-on way. Art therapy-based activities provide a safe space to externalise feelings, reflect on challenges, and develop new ways of thinking.
Creative practices like collage, sensory art-making, or collaborative projects encourage self-expression while fostering collaboration and connection. They also allow participants to step away from the virtual world and immerse themselves in the physical, tactile process of creation.
We use these aspects—
mindfulness, looking at art, and art-making—in our workshops to approach topics holistically, addressing challenges from multiple angles to support wellbeing, reflection, and connection.
Insights and Takeaways
Participants shared how the
From Connectivity to Connection workshop impacted them:
- 62.5% said it provided tools to manage stress and energy levels.
- 37.5% found it supported focus and productivity during the workday.
- 75% rated the overall experience as very good.
One participant shared:
“The workshop allowed me to re-centre myself and reflect on how much digital life impacts our lives.”
These results highlight how a holistic approach—combining mindfulness, art, and creativity—can make a meaningful difference in managing the demands of the digital world.
Reconnecting Through Intentional Breaks
Taking breaks from technology isn’t just about disconnecting—it’s about reconnecting. Reconnecting with ourselves through mindfulness, with others through meaningful conversations, and with the world through creativity and presence.
As one participant beautifully put it:
“The workshop allowed me to stay open-minded and explore myself in new ways.”
Techtimeout Tuesday reminds us that stepping away from our screens is a necessary practice to reclaim balance, reduce stress, and foster deeper connections in our lives.
